Sundials

Sundials

My interest in sundials stems primarily from an interest in astronomy.

I make a variety of different dials, some hand-built and some using rubber molds . Unless I know the dial is likely to remain at a specific location, they are not corrected for longitude. Please refer to dial corrections for more explanation on the various limitations of time-keeping associated with sundials.

Because the sun's position experiences annual as well as daily changes, one can construct sundials which not only tell the time of day, but also the season of the year. These markings are sometimes referred to as the solar calendar.

If one has even a little bit of motivation, constructing a sundial is not as difficult as one might suppose. One doesn't have to be good at mathematics in order to make even somewhat complicated dials that function quite nicely. The key is in finding the right software. To that end, I've added my "2¢" worth to the "zoo" of astronomical software available on the internet.
