Recent Work

These are some experimental pieces of sculpture that turned out decent enough to throw on the web, a birdbath, this one with a full 360° twist (see entry for July-Aug), plus a couple of experimental sunfaces using plaster molds.

For individuals who want to experiment with making their own concrete art and want to minimize their capital expenditure, here is a simple, cheap way to construct a small, internal concrete vibrator.

I spent a good bit of the summer tinkering with birdbath construction and pedestal design using a half-twist double helix. They were made using gray cement and stained with iron and copper-based acid stains.

As part of the work I put into writing the dial calculators (see the following entry), I wrote a short article on how to solve an arbitrarily oriented bifilar sundial which was published by the North American Sundial Society in the June, 2011 (Volume 18 Number 2) issue of the Compendium.

A slightly expanded online version of the article is available to those who aren't too averse to math (and have some knowledge of dot and cross products).

These are some sundial calculators that people may or may not find interesting or useful. My original intention had been to write something solely for personal use that would: 1) run entirely inside a browser; 2) have a reasonably decent graphical display; and 3) be easy to program and maintain. The project got a little out of hand, so I decided to dress it up a little and throw it on the web.
