Process

This page holds a series of images that roughly outline the basic steps taken during the process of making a piece of fabric-formed sculpture.

Sewing up a form...

Getting ready to mix some concrete...

If you work in an enclosed area, be sure to use a respirator when conditions turn dusty. I also use fans in the windows to facilitate air movement.

Sand is built up around the piece as concrete is placed into the form...

Concrete placement is done. Waiting for it to set...

After setting (about 4-6 hours during the summer months), the sand and fabric are removed. This presupposes the piece is poured "base-first". When the piece is poured "base-last" (i.e. upside down), I generally wait until the next day before removing the sand. This gives some much needed strength gain to resist the stresses that will be imposed when turning the piece to an upright position.

The piece is wrapped in wet towels and plastic and then allowed to cure for anywhere from one week to two months (depending on the weather).
